Fairlands was the venue this week on what looked like a small pitch; everyone's first touch was going to be crucial. Following defeat against Cranleigh, Shalford started with purpose and dominated the opening 20 minutes. Set pieces were creating numerous chances, yet Burrows crossed for captain Tidy to open the scoring. Within 2 minutes a pin point Malcolm cross landed on the head of Burrows and bounced into the net, 2-0. Shalford relaxed and saw out the half, with Godalming failing to register a single strike on target, although a Hooper back pass-come volley did ensure Gareth was still awake. The only unsavoury moment was Shalford Vets first ever booking for Tim Hooper, the dirty scoundrel.
Second half kicked off and they scored! How dare they! Game on. This half produced a lot more open football and end to end stuff at times, however, Shalford made it 3-1 when Simmy finished a fine passing move. The "new school " referee awarded Shalford a penalty which Wozza converted to make it 4, Malcolm rounded the on rushing keeper to slot in from a full 40 yards to make it 5 and a second penalty which big Phil converted for 6. It finished 6-3 to Shalford with Wiggie,Jules and Mike S coming on to good effect. So a good team performance all round with man of the match going to Simmy for his hard work defending from the front. Quote of the day... It was noted that Burrows had failed to take on their useful left back all game, to which someone commented: " Burrows couldn't beat eggs today!!! " no hidding places in the vets squad!
